7/ Food And Drug Administration Issues Ban On Cigarette-Shaped Confectionery

Amman, Mar. 25 (Petra) – The Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) has issued an urgent public health advisory regarding the illegal circulation of unlicensed candy products manufactured in the shape of cigarettes.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the regulatory body confirmed that these items have not been cleared through official import channels and are being traded illicitly under various misleading labels.

The JFDA’s inspection teams have launched an expansive field campaign to purge the local market of these products. Early enforcement actions resulted in the seizure of a significant quantity of the contraband at one commercial facility, which was subsequently shuttered by authorities.

The administration noted that all confectionery products intended for the Jordanian market must undergo rigorous technical committee reviews to ensure compliance with national safety standards and labeling regulations before being granted an import permit.

The ban is rooted in both safety concerns and legislative compliance. Under the Public Health Law No. 47 of 2008 and its subsequent amendments, any product that promotes or mimics tobacco consumption is strictly prohibited from display or sale. The JFDA emphasized that cigarette-shaped sweets are viewed as promotional tools for smoking, posing a particular risk to minors by normalizing tobacco-related imagery.

To prevent further infiltration of these unregulated goods, the JFDA is coordinating closely with the Jordan Customs Department to tighten surveillance at all border crossings. This multi-agency approach aims to intercept unauthorized shipments before they reach retail shelves, particularly targeting items disguised as "flavorings" or generic "sweets."

The administration has urged the public to exercise vigilance and report any sightings of the prohibited candy. Consumers and whistleblowers can reach the JFDA through its toll-free complaint line (117114), via email at info@jfda.jo, or through their dedicated WhatsApp service at 0795632000. Legal action will be pursued against any vendors found in possession of the illicit stock.
