12/ Muluki Highway Closed in Tafila Due to Dam Overflow, Road Damage

Amman, March 26 (Petra) -- The Ministry of Public Works and Housing announced Thursday the precautionary closure of the Muluki Highway in the al-Laban area of Tafila Governorate, following overflow from the Shidham Dam that caused significant erosion and structural damage to sections of the roadway.

Maintenance crews and technical teams have commenced immediate on-site evaluations and rehabilitation works, with efforts focused on restoring the affected infrastructure and reopening the road to traffic at the earliest possible time.

The ministry called on citizens and road users to comply with instructions issued by security authorities and to utilize designated alternative routes until maintenance operations are completed.

Director of Public Works in Tafila Ammar Hajjaj said heavy rainfall triggered the dam overflow, generating strong and continuous flood currents toward the highway, which resulted in the collapse of part of the road. He added that the closure was implemented as a precautionary measure pending completion of necessary repairs and safety checks.

Hajjaj noted that Public Works teams, equipped with heavy machinery, promptly initiated repair operations and established a temporary traffic diversion to maintain connectivity between Tafila and Karak.

He added that technical teams are operating around the clock to contain the impact of adverse weather conditions and mitigate damage caused by flooding and landslides across the road network.
