20/ Greater Amman Municipality Launches "Schools Reinvent Cities" Competition

Amman, March 26 (Petra) – The Greater Amman Municipality, through its Sustainable Development Unit and Amman Resilience Initiative, launched on Thursday the "Schools Reinvent Cities" competition in partnership with the Ministry of Education, the Queen Rania Center for Information and Communication Technology in Education, the C40 Network, and Maysalward Company.

The launch follows a preparatory phase that included intensive teacher training on the Minecraft Education platform, equipping educators to guide students in developing creative solutions to reimagine Amman in sustainable and innovative ways.

The competition encourages students to design more sustainable and livable urban neighborhoods using modern urban planning concepts such as enhancing green spaces, adopting clean energy, and implementing recycling and water reuse practices. Participants will transform their ideas into interactive digital models, fostering critical thinking, teamwork, and practical engagement with urban sustainability challenges.

In a recorded message to students, the Mayor of Greater Amman, Yousef Shawarbeh, highlighted that young people are central to shaping the city’s future. He noted that the competition offers a tangible opportunity for students to contribute to building a greener, more resilient Amman, and that ideas developed virtually could translate into real-world urban solutions.

Lubna Abu Ein, Executive Director of the Planning Directorate, said the initiative underscores the role of students in shaping urban development. She described the competition as a comprehensive educational platform that integrates knowledge and technology, enabling youth to design sustainable models aligned with their vision for a more livable city.

Through the initiative, the Municipality aims to empower young people and enhance their engagement in sustainable urban development, in line with national priorities and global climate action trends.
