14/ Garments, Leather Sector Fully Prepared for Eid al-Adha Demand, JCI Says
Amman, May 24 (Petra) -- The national leather and garment industry is entering the Eid al-Adha season with strong production readiness and confidence in its ability to meet rising domestic demand, according to industry representative at the Jordan Chamber of Industry (JCI), Ihab Qadri. He noted that local factories are prepared to supply the market with a wide range of clothing, footwear, and leather products, offering quality, variety, and competitive pricing that caters to different consumer groups across the Kingdom. The sector remains one of the kingdom’s key industrial pillars, generating more than $2 billion in annual exports and reaching nearly 80 international markets, including major destinations such as the United States. This global footprint reflects the sector’s steady growth and increasing competitiveness. With around 1,000 factories and production facilities, most of them small and medium-sized enterprises spread across various regions, the industry plays a significant role in employment, providing tens of thousands of direct and indirect jobs while also supporting interconnected local supply chains. Qadri emphasized that local manufacturers have the capacity and technical expertise to fully cover seasonal demand without shortages, pointing to continuous improvements in production technology, design innovation, and product quality that have strengthened the position of Jordanian goods against imported alternatives. He added that the Eid period presents an important opportunity to strengthen the presence of national products in the local market, particularly as e-commerce continues to expand and imported goods increasingly compete through online platforms. In this context, he highlighted recent government steps to regulate online trade and parcel imports, which have helped improve fairness in market competition. These measures, he said, have reduced the impact of low-priced imports that previously competed under different cost structures, creating a more balanced environment for local producers who operate under full regulatory, tax, and operational obligations. He also pointed out that regulating e-commerce is aimed at protecting economic stability and ensuring fair competition, noting that local factories contribute directly to employment and the national economy, while fully complying with industrial and tax standards. At the same time, many Jordanian brands have expanded into digital sales channels, improving their reach to consumers and strengthening their competitiveness both locally and internationally. He concluded that supporting domestic products during seasonal peaks such as Eid al-Adha contributes directly to economic growth and job creation, as a significant share of consumer spending, estimated at 70–80 percent per dinar, circulates back into the local economy through wages, services, and supply chains. He further stressed that the sector has strong growth prospects under the Economic Modernization Vision, which prioritizes the industry due to its role in boosting exports, increasing value addition, and expanding employment opportunities. //Petra// WH
