5/ Aqaba Is a Key Hub for Sporting Events Across Kingdom
Aqaba, May 24 (Petra) -- The Aqaba Sports Festival 2026, held as part of celebrations marking Jordan’s 80th Independence Day, reflects the Kingdom’s ongoing commitment to empowering young people and expanding their participation in sports and youth initiatives, Minister of Youth Raed Sami Adwan said. He added that Aqaba is increasingly emerging as a major destination for sporting events and activities in Jordan. During his participation in the festival activities at Aqaba Youth City, Adwan told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that Aqaba’s unique geographical location, climate, and tourism appeal make it an ideal setting for hosting a wide range of sports, including both team and individual competitions. He explained that the Ministry of Youth seeks, through Aqaba Youth City, to encourage young men and women to play an active role in sports programs and community activities. The minister noted that Aqaba receives continuous support and attention from His Majesty King Abdullah II and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II due to its strategic importance and distinctive tourism environment. He noted these advantages provide the city with exceptional opportunities, particularly in activities and sports exclusive to Aqaba, especially water sports. Adwan added that Aqaba Youth City features advanced sports facilities, including football pitches, basketball courts, and venues for martial arts and combat sports. He affirmed that the ministry is working continuously to modernize and expand these facilities in line with the ambitions of Jordanian youth and athletes. He also highlighted the ministry’s efforts to organize sports festivals and youth programs in cooperation with public institutions and the private sector to strengthen community engagement and create a vibrant environment for young people. According to the minister, the strong participation of Aqaba families and their children in the festival reflects growing public awareness of the positive role sports play in developing skills, confidence, and character. The minister pointed out that several combat sports featured in Aqaba are considered specialized activities not commonly available in other governorates, adding that this demonstrates the strong support of the local community for youth participation, especially among girls and young women. On infrastructure development, Adwan said the government is giving significant attention to Aqaba Youth City through a number of ongoing projects, including the redevelopment of Aqaba Stadium and the rehabilitation of its football field in accordance with Jordan Football Association standards, allowing the venue to host local and regional competitions. He further announced plans to build new sports fields, upgrade sports facilities, and improve youth centers, while also enhancing the capabilities of professionals working in the youth sector. Development plans also include upgrading youth camps and accommodation facilities in Aqaba, including Al Hussein Youth Camp on the southern coast. Adwan revealed plans to redevelop the Youth Hotel affiliated with the Ministry of Youth into a comprehensive and affordable facility capable of attracting sports teams and youth delegations to Aqaba, supporting both the city’s tourism and sports sectors. He concluded by saying that the next phase will include large-scale improvements to youth lodges, chalets, and ministry facilities to create a modern and integrated environment that meets the needs of young people and strengthens Aqaba’s status as a leading sports and tourism destination in Jordan and the region. //Petra// WH
