9/ Amman Municipality... Decades of Development on 80th Independence Day

Amman, May 24 (Petra) -- Amman is marking the Kingdom’s 80th Independence anniversary alongside a wide range of urban achievements that reflect the growing role of the Greater Amman Municipality in shaping the capital’s modern identity and driving its long-term development.

Over the past years, Amman has steadily evolved into a vibrant and contemporary city that mirrors Jordan’s broader development path. Guided by the vision of the Hashemite leadership, the capital has undergone extensive improvements across infrastructure, transportation, digital services, and environmental management, all within a unified strategy focused on sustainability and quality of life.

With continued support and directives from His Majesty King Abdullah II and close follow-up from His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, the municipality is pursuing an ambitious agenda to position Amman as a smart, future-ready city capable of managing rapid urban growth and emerging challenges.

Throughout the early decades of the 21st century, the city has strengthened its reputation as a resilient urban center, capable of adapting to regional and global shifts despite wider instability. Its development approach has increasingly relied on structured planning, long-term vision, and a focus on livable urban spaces.

Urban planning has played a central role in this transformation. Since adopting a comprehensive master plan in 2007, recognized internationally, the municipality has rolled out major development frameworks, including East Amman development projects, urban density studies, and the implementation of "Amman Vision" initiatives, culminating in a long-term 2050 urban strategy designed to shape a fully smart and sustainable capital.

Infrastructure investment has been a major pillar of this progress, with approximately two billion dinars allocated to roads, bridges, tunnels, drainage systems, and public parks. This has included extensive roadworks, new intersections, and the expansion of green spaces across the city.

Key public parks and recreational landmarks have also been developed and upgraded, such as Al Hussein Gardens, King Abdullah II Gardens, Centennial Park, Flag Square, and Marj Al Hamam Park, enhancing the city’s public spaces and environmental landscape.

To strengthen urban tourism, the municipality has introduced 13 heritage and cultural routes designed to connect historic sites and stimulate local tourism. Efforts have also focused on revitalizing downtown Amman and restoring prominent landmarks including Rainbow Street, Wakalat Street, Hashemite Square, Faisal Square, and Jabal Al-Qala’a, reinforcing the city’s cultural and historical identity.

In waste management, the municipality has partnered with international companies specializing in recycling and treatment to improve efficiency and sustainability. Through Amman Vision Company for Treatment and Recycling, the city is shifting toward a modern circular waste system based on sorting, processing, and reducing landfill dependency while turning waste into a usable resource.

Transport has also seen a major shift with the introduction of the Amman Bus network and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), the first integrated mass transit system in the capital. The initiative has significantly improved mobility, encouraged public transport use, and served over 111 million passengers, while expanding routes to Salt and Madaba and introducing the first fully electric bus line in Jordan.

Environmental initiatives continue to advance, including LED lighting upgrades, solar energy expansion, fleet modernization, and the development of the Ghabawi landfill as a key national environmental project.

Amman’s digital transformation has further strengthened its smart city direction through e-services, digital payments, smart mapping systems, integration with the "Sanad" platform, and the launch of centralized communication channels such as the "Amman Is Listening" platform.

On the international stage, the capital has gained recognition in smart city and sustainability rankings, receiving multiple awards in innovation, climate action, transport development, and public service efficiency. It has also expanded global cooperation through partnerships with 45 cities worldwide.

Culturally and socially, the municipality continues to invest in community infrastructure such as cultural centers, sports facilities, libraries, and public spaces, while supporting major events including the Amman International Book Fair and the Amman Marathon, reinforcing its role as a lively and inclusive urban center.
